Rota
Rota is a genuine Andalusian town by the Cádiz Bay: a car-free old town with the Castillo de Luna, fishing harbour, market and one of Spain's longest town beaches – Playa de la Costilla – with a promenade along the entire coast. You'll stay right in the heart of everyday life with tapas bars and restaurants within walking distance.
Golf is close by: Costa Ballena Ocean Golf (27 holes, José María Olazábal) ten minutes away, Sherry Golf in Jerez half an hour away and Montecastillo and Arcos Gardens a little further inland. Jerez sherry bodegas, El Puerto de Santa María and Cádiz – Europe's oldest city – are easy day trips. Fly to Jerez or Seville.
Winter is Rota's best-kept secret: sunny days around 20 degrees, peaceful beaches and the tapas bars buzzing as the town goes about its daily life. Costa Ballena's broad fairways by the Atlantic are rarely fully booked, and after your round you can enjoy fresh fish at the harbour or a sherry tasting in Jerez.
