Palácio Estoril
Classic, luxurious with world-class SPA!
Hotel Palacio was built in 1930 and over the years has been continuously renovated and transformed into a modern luxury hotel. Throughout its history, Palacio has been a favourite among royalty, film stars and spies, and it was here, it is said, that Ian Fleming created James Bond. And it was here that the Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service was filmed.
Palacio is very centrally located in Estoril, this classic and fashionable suburb of Lisbon. It is just 300 metres from the beautiful sandy beach with its seafront promenade that stretches all the way from Estoril to Cascais. 300 metres in the other direction lies Estoril Casino – Europe's largest Casino. Within walking distance you will find several of Estoril's better restaurants serving excellent fish and meat dishes.
At Palacio you stay in real luxury in magnificent rooms, and your day begins with Palacio's grand breakfast buffet in the classic dining room with views over the hotel's pool and gardens. Palacio's renowned SPA facility – Banyan Tree – with massage pools, flowing swimming pool, relaxation area and sauna is at your disposal. Palacio's shuttle bus goes to Estoril Golf Club every day of the week (takes approximately 5 minutes).
Double rooms are standard facing the entrance/car park. Upgrades can be made to Superior (with garden views, lower floors) or Superior Deluxe (higher up with garden views and sea views).
Estoril GC, or Clube de Golfe do Estoril as the golf course is called, is one of Portugal's oldest clubs. The golf course was established in 1929 and the club is a member of the Portuguese golf federation. The clubhouse is an experience like no other – here you feel the touch of history in the well-preserved, classic atmosphere framed by teak, the silvery glinting prize collection, classic leather furniture and gaming tables with green baize.

Lisbon
About 25 kilometres west of Lisbon lies Estoril, this classic and elegant little resort at the mouth of the Tagus river. Often called the "coast of sun" or "the Portuguese Riviera", Estoril (and neighbouring Cascais) was where Europe's rich, famous and even royal figures sought refuge during the Second World War when Portugal was safe and neutral. Grand hotels and Europe's largest casino were built to welcome them, and it was here that Ian Fleming got the idea for James Bond.
South of the river, in Seixal and Alcochete, you live peacefully and close to nature – with quick access to the capital's culture, restaurants and local life.
The golf courses are nestled in the pine forests south of the Tagus – peaceful, classic courses without crowding. On your rest day, you take the bridge or ferry into Lisbon: tram 28 through Alfama, pastéis de nata in Belém and the view from São Jorge castle. Sintra with its fairytale palaces and Cascais seafront promenade are within an hour, and the winter months offer clear, mild days that are perfect for both golf and city walks.
